EINSTAR is the consumer and prosumer 3D-scanning brand of SHINING 3D, and its UK store is a narrow, deep specialist rather than a general electronics retailer. There are about twenty products on it. Most of them cost more than a laptop. That combination makes it a store worth understanding before you buy rather than one to browse casually, and the UK-specific terms in particular are not the same as the ones you will read on the brand's American site.

What the UK store stocks

The range splits three ways. The handheld scanners are the portable end and the part most buyers arrive for — the EINSTAR and EINSTAR 2 units, the pocket-sized Rockit and the wireless all-in-one VEGA, running from roughly £645 to £1,699 at the time of writing. Above them sits the EinScan family, the desktop and standalone machines built for higher-precision work: the SP V2 and SE V2, the tri-mode laser Rigil and its lighter Rigil Lite sibling, and the marker-free Trak tracking system at the top of the range, which is the most expensive item on the UK store by a wide margin.

The second group is software, and it is sold in its own right rather than only bundled with hardware. EXModel and the cheaper EXModel Personal handle scan-to-CAD and reverse-engineering workflows; EXMeasure is aimed at inspection and measurement. Licences run from roughly £165 to £719 at the time of writing.

The third group is scanning consumables — reference markers in three sizes, matte spheres and calibration ball bars, a tripod, a 3D mouse and scanning spray. These are the accessories that make a scan work rather than optional extras, and some of them are not cheap: a calibration ball bar can cost more than an entry-level handheld scanner.

The discount worth knowing about

Offers on this brand are occasional rather than standing, and when one appears it tends to be scoped rather than sitewide. That is more useful than it sounds if you already own a scanner. Delivery and customs — the UK terms to budget for

This is where the UK store diverges most sharply from the American one, and neither point is visible from a product page.

First, UK delivery is charged. EINSTAR publishes a delivery rate table that lists the United States and Germany at zero and the United Kingdom at a charged rate. On a five-thousand-pound scanner that is immaterial; on a set of markers or a bottle of scanning spray it is a noticeable share of the order, which is a good reason to consolidate consumables into one purchase rather than buying them as you need them.

Second, and more consequential: UK orders are fulfilled from the company's German warehouse, and EINSTAR's published delivery terms state that for orders sent through its UK and global stores, customs clearance charges — duties, taxes and fees — are the responsibility of the recipient. The company also states that it cannot predict what those charges will be. On a purchase of this size that is worth establishing with your own expectations set before you order, not when a courier asks for payment on the doorstep.

On timing, the merchant states that orders are processed within one to three business days with transit typically taking three to seven, giving an estimated window of four to ten business days at the time of writing.

Buy from the right storefront

EINSTAR runs separate regional stores and is unusually strict about them. Its policy states that items must be ordered from the site designated for your region, that each regional store only supports orders and delivery within its own area, and that orders placed outside a site's supported region will not be processed. Its US store is United States only; its European store explicitly excludes the United Kingdom.

The practical consequence is that a UK buyer who finds a better-looking price on the American site cannot simply order it, and a price comparison between the two is not meaningful anyway once delivery and import charges are in the picture.

How to save at EINSTAR

Work out whether your constraint is capture or processing before you spend anything. A great many people buy a second, better scanner when the thing limiting their output is the software they process scans in — and software is both the cheaper purchase and the one that actually carries a discount here.

If you are buying hardware, match the machine to the object rather than to the specification sheet. The handheld units are built for things you can walk around; the desktop machines are built for small parts on a turntable. They are not interchangeable, and the more expensive option is not the better one if it is the wrong shape of tool for your work.

Consolidate consumables into a single order. Markers, spray and calibration hardware are all things you will reorder, and each separate delivery carries its own charge on a UK order.
